Aklim,

Yes fuel flow will decrease as the filter becomes plugged, up to point where it won't pass molecules of fuel at all. But the filter can decrease alot of fuel flow before it doesn't supply enough fuel for full engine power.

That's why I test filters on an uphill drive, the time when the engine is needs the maximum amount of fuel. I have a "test track" near home where I do my tests. Is about a mile long and all up hill with speed limit signs handily placed for start and finish point. I also do air cleaner tests there too.

I guess it comes down to convenience. I prefer to change it on a schedule so that I am not having to change filters when I am not ready. This way, I can schedule it for Thursday evening. Whereas, with the "test track" method, I would have to change it when it gets bad and not necessarily at the time of my choosing. Further to that, the wife drives it mostly so what that would mean is that I would have to test it myself every now and then to be sure or rely on her to tell me something is not right. Unless there is a yellow light, she won't know if something is wrong. The most she does automotive wise is to add fuel. I take care of everything else.

This has been an interesting read I`ve had some good laughs here.
the main thing is we change them.

this could be what is the best filter? what`s inside them like the oil filter thread a while back, with pictures of them cut open.

we all drive different amount of miles ea month, some far away and some
just a few miles.
CRAIG drives 40000 mi a yr. when do you have time to stop and service your car? thats 3333.3333 miles a month.

If I could figure out how to get one of those 2 ft long Peterbilt fuel filters
on my MB, I would never need to change my filter .

At 55mph, that's only two hours per day. That means the car is not in use 92% of the time.

I drive around the county on business, usually 2-3000 miles round trips once or twice per month. I actually work from home about 2/3 of the time, and I can pretty much control my own schedule. It's not like I'm driving 150 miles every day, most days my driving is minimal, but when I'm going someplace I usually do 600 - 1000 per day.

It's more like 18 hours on some days and 15 minutes on most other days.

But you are correct, if I drove 55 mph for 10 hours per day, 5 days per week, I would be covering 143K miles per year (and I would have to buy a lot of new audio books).

I change my filters and oil every 4 months. For the price they cost it's stupid not to. Over here the whole filter kit, oil filter + air filter + fuel pre filter and spin on fuel filter are less than $18.
