Starter 'gremlin'
The starter on my '84 300tdt has been 'going' for about a year, and, as Murphy's Law dictates, it's in the single digits here and the starter no longer engages. I got one from the junkyard and put the MB up on jackstands. Turns out, the bottom starter bolt was missing and the top one had backed itself almost all the way out. I torqued them in and the MB leaped to life at the touch of the key, as usual.

Good job.
I have seen some in the wrecking yards with a "L" bracket attached to the end of the starter and a couple screws into the block. I guess this takes the stress off the bolts with the viabration of the Diesel. Mine has never had this bracket, that might be why one of mine was a little loose one time. Doesn't it just figure! Hey at least it wasn't at the mall or parallel parked in downtown when it happened. Great luck having it be just the bolts!

I have a gremlin as well. Fortunately, it is rare, but when I drive my 1981 300D for a long period (which allows for all engine part to get hot) the starter takes a few tries until the gear is kicked into the fly wheel. It is always a bit of a sinking feeling when your started spins but does not engage the fly wheel.

I had a similar issue last winter. The bolts in the bracket were loose and I think they allowed anough movement in the starte to make for hard cold starting.

Last time my starter got going and didn't engage the engine I had to hammer it to make it stop.
Funny thing is it hasn't goofed up since... but the passengers still wonder why there's always a hammer under their feet. I keep it where I can get to it... |

Amazing what a hammer can fix.
