Manual trans gear oil?

What fluid goes in here? I've seen manuals with all sorts of different oils being able to go in them (syncromesh, ATF, 75W90, etc)...

I say Redline MT-90 or MTL. It has worked wonders for my 240D's manual transmission. This has already been discussed in some very interesting threads, among which:

Mechanic says "cluster bearings in transmission are nearly shot" (4spd)

There was nothing concise once searched. Just like any other oil thread.

Redline MTL would be best but any Type-A or Dex/Mer ATF will work.

Where is the fill plug on the manual trannies? I'm assuming it's like the diff, and you fill into the opening until it drips out????

My plan is to initially drain and refill then to drive about for 500miles to clean out the insides. A la the rear diff...

Once that mileage has been passed I can decide on what oil would be okay. Seems that most anything will work, correct?

Fill plug should be on the drivers side and take a 14mm allen.

It's on the passenger's side, just like the diff, and you fill it likewise until it drips out... using a 14mm hex tip socket (allen). Be aware that the space for accessing the manual transmission fill plug is quite limited... I could manage all right using a 1/2" drive ratchet coupled with a 1/2" 14mm hex key socket. Make sure that, as with the differential, you FIRST open the fill plug, then the drain plug. Should you do it in reverse, you may find yourself stuck with a fill plug you are unable to open and a tranny without fluid...

People have had good success with Mobil 1 ATF in the manual gearboxes. It does a good job of cleaning the insides out too, so if you want to run something in there for a while and drain it to get the gunk out, that's probably what you want.
