Tranny Dip Stick

Just in a new Tranny Dip Stick for my 1998 E300D Turbo Diesel

How many marks up the dip stick is the proper fluid level when at operating temp and is there a cold level...

Dont have my stick in front of me but IIRC there are two lower marks labeled 20C and two upper marks labeled 80C. Orig intent was to get teh fill between those two sets of marks based upon the temp the trans was being checked at. Procedure was revised to the upper (80C) marks at a later date. Use an IR thermo on the pan with the engine running. I found it useful to mark the point at which the end of the stick hit the bottom of the pan as on mine was difficult to "feel" it hit bottom with the engine running.

You want it between the two marks when the car is a full operating temperature. There's a spec for cold readings, but I don't know it offhand.
