Parts Crosscheck

Is there anywhere that I can determine which parts can go on what models.years?

For example, lets say that I want to replace the rear seats in a 83 300SD. Will the seats from a 94 420 fit?

You need to stick to W126 parts, very few parts from other models will fit.

Hmm...for example:
http://www.ts-server24.de/ats/default.asp
...you choose the part, click on it and then select the "vehicles" option next to the arrow and a list of manuf. and vehicle models is shown...for example chain tensioner 110 050 06 11 is used on :

Model Year of construction
from - to
Saloon (W123) 01.76 - 12.85
KOMBI Estate (S123) 09.77 - 12.85
COUPE (C123) 03.77 - 12.85
S-CLASS (W116) 08.72 - 07.80
S-CLASS (W126) 10.79 - 06.91
SL Coupe (C107) 01.72 - 09.81
SL (R107) 05.71 - 08.89
G-CLASS (W460) 03.79 - 08.93
/8 (W114) 01.68 - 11.76
/8 Coupe (W114) 04.69 - 02.77
....etc.
The other option is to browse the OEM catalogues (Bilstein,Sachs,Bosch,ATE)-they support cross-reference too....

My German is really poor and took me a bit to notice you could pick english language by clicking the British flag. Looks like a useful site.

Hollander Interchange

The Hollander Interchange guide http://www.hollanderinterchange.net/about.php
is what used parts dealers (junkyards) have used since the beginning of time to find out what parts from what car will fit. Since you have an older car (by junkyard standards) you could probably pick one up on eBay that covers your car for not too much money.
