Nellybell is DOA.

The 616 in my '75 W115 died this afternoon. Thing Two was driving it about 45mph, heard a 'poof' and saw the oil pressure go to zero. She killed the engine and coasted to the side of the road.

AAA just dropped it off here at Area 51...plenty of oil in the crankcase but there's a place on the underside of the hood where oil has sprayed against it...almost like excessive blowby.

I cranked it and it rolled over about 4-5 revolutions then locked up.

Hmmm....

This is a great month for old Benzos. My SDL just puked it's turbo oil seal last week.

Uh oh! Sounds like Thing Two handled the situation perfectly. These things work great right up until the point when they don't.......
Is an autopsy scheduled? In all your parts cars, do you have an extra engine?

I have another 115-style 616 in a car I got from TXBill years ago. Supposedly it's running...but, I stole the injectors off of it a while back and sold Palangi the old style fuel filter. I'll probably retrieve that car, swap what it needs to run and give it a crank to see what happens. If it's halfway decent, I'll pull it and swap engines.

I'm up to my ass in alligators right now. It will be a while before any of this actually happens.

I'm thinking a cracked rod cap or broken camshaft. This unit has been on synthetic it's entire life but, the odometer broke at 68000 (long before I bought it from Paul Lange) and we can only guess at the real elapsed miles.

Are those chain driven oil pumps? Possibly that is all that's wrong and it balled up into a bind when you cranked on it.

616 is shaft driven.

Same here. I was driving it on a fairly regular basis up until last week when the SDL started smoking and we swapped out the '84 300D so SWMBO would have an automatic to drive while I fixed the turbo. There were no indications of any impending failure, oil changed regularly, etc, etc...

Well, can't say I didn't try,lol.

If she shut it off right away and it was still rolling over when you first went to crank it, it's probably something very fixable still. Maybe the pump came loose or the pickup tube came off and lodged in the crank?
