Bad weather

Saw a 300CD do a 360 on I-96 this morning.... one of 6 cars either on the shoulder or the ditch on the way to work. And I only traveld 14 miles..... I was doing 40mph on the TD... any faster my wheels would spin.....

we do, we drive slowly, and avoid frozen patches, and hills. tree lined ones especially...
since I have been in NC for 25 years, am I still a yankee? and since I was born in southern CA, was I ever a yankee? the furthest north I ever went was washington state, lived in SD for a while... air force brat and all... worst snow I ever had to deal with was in colorado, worst driving I had to deal with was in Washington... Mt St. Hellens went up... THAT was fun... pitch black at 1:00 in the afternoon. I was not driving age yet, but I remember it well...

Wow....was the car ok? Gotta keep those CD's on the road!

I think my dad has seen that same CD on I-96....he travels the same route at the same time as that guy pretty often apparently.

Last night I saw a pickup flipped over a guard rail with its cab smashed....no idea if the person lived...it didn't look good It was 30-40mph for about 20 miles...REAL icy...not much snow...just a nice coating of ice as salt doesn't work at those temps. (it was like 9F) I could feel the car wander around a bit even at 30-40mph with real good tires....

So far I have never lost control of a car....I've done some long sideways slides that I have recovered from....but never lost control.

Last night I couldn't stop on the snow heading toward a busy road so I plowed into the snowbank (soft snow, and only at about 10-12mph) along the road to stop.....backed back out of it...and continued on my way.

Those were the conditions sort of when i slid off last winter and parked against a nice white oak tree. It got nice and slushy for a while but then it turned slick again.

My lesson for the day to share with everybody out there: No matter how much you know better, you'll still want to lock up the brakes when you get into a slide. That's the very reason I wasn't able to keep it on the road. Completely locked the back end up and slid it from side to side (literally, a 90 degree arc in each direction) about five times before I lost it.

If there's any young driver getting parental driving lessons out there... the most valuable lesson that nobody ever thought to teach me about driving on slick stuff... was the parking lot get-it-sliding-and-don't-hit-the-brake-pedal test. That's the one I failed.

My X5 made it up the driveway today, but I didn't. After getting out of my car, I fell straight on my a$$ and slid down the driveway. Had to crawl back up the driveway; it didn't help that I was wearing loafers.

This ice kind of hit Wichita by suprise this afternoon, ALOT of fender benders. My Benzes are tucked away, warm in the garage.

Snow is fun to do 360s in parking lots and wide roads at night. Not so much fun when there are other cars in your path.

Indeed it is. These cars are very capable of spinning in controlled circles.

like I said, in SD, we all put STUDDED snow tires on in september... cause the snow and ICE never melted... the cra& just fell, blew around and fell some more. I never knew what an ice storm was, cause that's just the way it was in SD, if it rained, it was ice, if it snowed, it stuck until spring. nasty place to drive a diesel... but drive them we did. a garage was mandatory, and dual exits was the norm, one north, one east. the wind always had one side covered, and one side clear. imagine snow up to the roof of the garage... yup.
I remember falling through some snow drift, and just pushing my way to the hill, and climbing out of it... over my head. no fun. my dad learned how to drive in that stuff in ICELAND... ya ain't seen a snow storm until you lived there for a few years... all 4 tires MUST have studs by law there... and on another note, alcahol at all, and driving = losing car, and jail for 24HOURS.

I agree, what is this snow you speak of?
Is it that whitish stuff on my lawn in the morning? Oh wait, that's frost, the closest we ever get to snow.

Down here in Texas, we're all complaining that it's cold because it got below 60*.
It's back to 72* tomorrow though.
