Loud Clunking noise...what is it?

Every once in a while, after a colder night (San Diego - 40 degrees...yeah I know I know.), the car doesn't want to start right away. I figure that its fuel related...

But, I also hear a loud clunky noise. The noise comes from the passenger side of the vehicle...could be inside the passenger side door, just below underneath, or maybe the firewall. The clunking is accomanied by a knock that can be felt as the engine tries to turn over.

Once the vehicle is running, the noise disappears. Only while cranking the starter and trying to get the car started first thing in the morning.

Just wondering if any of you know what's happening, and whether its something to be concerned with?

If the car doesn't start up instantly at 40F, then you really need new glow plugs. Also possibly fuel filters....

The knock may just be the engine firing unevenly when trying to start due to dead glowplugs.

Brand new glowplugs installed 1 month ago.

Fuel filter...maybe. But none of the other fuel filter symptoms...

my 85 300d will make a similar noise while cold starting , found broken studs under air filter assembly to be the rattle and banging, try looking there! Also plug up your heater on cold nights this should be helpful. good luck.

I should add that I've been using a biodiesel blend 20-50%. That, and I highly doub they winterize diesel fuel in San Diego...

I'd second on the air filter. When my mounts were bad that thing made some hellacious noise. A little bit off topic, but where do you get your bio from? I've been getting mine from that place off El Cajon blvd, but it's been kinda pricey.

Air filter mounts.
Mine were failing and I said fark it I'm busy...
Well the third one broke so at idle I got a Bang Bang Bang in tempo with my engine (kind of cool, my car can rap with it's bad injector ).
Anyway, in the time it took to order new ones form Fastlane and install them two days after they came in I had based a hole in the side of my air cleaner housing by way of the valve cover.

I'd change those sooner if I were you and learned from my stupidity...

Exhaust could clunk if something is loose and you have a glow plug out. Just because they are new does not mean one might not be disfunctioning. If it runs unevenly for a minute or so on startup and smokes blue then smooths out that probably is it.

yeah, that's the only place in town, for now. They'll be sorry for price gouging once a few more bio shops open up, which should happen soon.

No smoke regardless of fuel.

This morning it fired right up with a full tank of ULSD...

I think its the fuel and cool weather we've had here lately.
