idle control knob help
1982 300d...turned idle control knob counter clockwise to turn up idle(seemed too low and shakey on cold start)...now the knob just spins...must have broke...can i adjust idle without knob or is it a must to replace?...also is there a way to check engine rpm with a regular tachometer?...thanks everyone!!...my manual is on order

its not broke you need to remove the lower dash panel and then reach up inside and twist the nut back on it. the nut that is on the back will get loose and let the knob spin freely.

also, do you have to press the gas pedal tjen turn knob for setting?

Yes, you should press slightly on the fuel pedal before adjusting the idle knob, as it will reduce the tension on the linkage. Am a little curious though, as the idle control knob doesn't usually appear on a turbo engine. Is this a Euro non turbo?

My 79SD is a turbo and it has the idle control knob. I wonder when the transition away from the knob occurred? I used to think it happened with the turbo but apparently not. Why did MB remove it?
