Driver Seat base, coupe vs sedan
I have a 1980 300CD, only has 54K miles. Rescued it form a NY state barn last year. Records show it had been parked for about nine years and driven sparingly before that. It does have a lot ot the typical age related issues but not the wear. The current problem in my crosshairs is a sagging drivers seat base. I've read several posts sbout fixing and replacing it, adding tennis balls and/or pool noodles. I'd like to replace it with new and then maybe add some of these stiffening ideas to the new spring base. The problem, Performance and some other vendors don't seem to stock a coupe seat base, just can't get it. Only you sedan drivers seem to rate new part availability. My question: Can I buy the Sedan seat spring set and splice on or off everthing form my coupe that is different or is that just crazy. Better yet, do any of you know of a supplier that might stock the coupe seat spring?

I know on the sedans the seat bottoms from the passenger side can be swapped over to the drivers side. I know the coups have different seats in that they have to fold forward for access to the back. but I don`t know if the spring box is the same.
If you can`t find a new one (better have deep pockets) your best bet is to look around your local wrecking yards for a pass. side. I know I don`t see many coupes when iam in there. I`ll keep you in mind when Iam scrounging around. Charlie

They are different from the sedans they tilt down about two inches more in back to allow for headroom in the two inch lower coupe.
The springs might be adaptable, I don't know. I would probably buy a new spring base for the sedan if not too expensive and have your seat torn down and when it is torn apart sit the spring bases side by side and see how hard i it would be to cut and weld the sedan seat base to fit. I wouldn't be surprised if that is what they did in the first place at the factory. A lot of special coupe only parts are made from sedan parts that are hand modified. Tom W

sagging seat
Thanks for the input guys, I haven' found a coupe in any local yards so far. I'm inclined to buy the new sedan base as you recommend. Might be a $200 experiment but I have to try something. This seems like a pretty active site for these old Benz cars. I will post some additional questions/issues and keep an eye out to see if I can answer any posts as well.

why spend $200.00, go to Pick N Pull if you have them. I got a seat bottom for $12.00. I got one from the passenger side, it was nice a firm.
I also read here on the forum that the 126 seat bottom is the same, but I don`t know if it is early 126 or all of them. Charlie
