240 turbo?
Anyone ever installed a turbo on a 240?
I am debating giving it a try. Been thinking about it for a year or so now. Mechanics shouldn't be that hard but I'm just wondering what effect a turbo may have on a N/A motor with 240k. Thanks for any input. Cheers, Bill

Not a good idea. Turbo motors have many different modifications to take the additional stress/power of the turbo. Piston oil cooling jets, hardened crankshaft, etc....all critical to the longevity of the engine if it has a turbo. A N/A 240 engine has none of this....so you'd have problems. Also, it has no boost/alda fuel device on the injection pump. So getting it to add fuel properly based on boost would also be a big issue.
Overall it'd just shorten the life of the motor significantly, I'd not do it. There is a company in India that sells turbo 240 engines with all the proper modifications for it.

Oh well. Glad I asked. Didn't realize the crank would be different. Guess I'll continue to drive it like a loaded tractor trailer....pedal to the metal.

It would be cheaper to just find a good used turbo motor and convert your car. You should find a good running car with cosmetic issues and switch over all the mechanicals.

Bill, I know someone who has done this and it did speed up the car with the wastegate set at 7psi. I haven't driven it because it ate up the piston rings. It has 230K on the engine it didn't like it and it's blowing oil everywhere. The dyno (through an automatic) indicated 38rwhp pre turbo. It it getting a new motor and a manual trans conversion and then we'll have to see how it does after that.

Unfortunately, the Force Motors OM616a engine isn't in production any more and is only available for "bulk orders for stationary applications" given that their foundry isn't producing them, but customers still might need replacements. I've been in contact with their exports manager and gotten nowhere, basically -- we'd have to do a group buy of "generators" to be able to get any.

There were a few turbo kit manufactures for the 616 back in the 80s. As long as you keep the boost down to 5-7 psi and keep an eye on your exhaust gas temperatures it should be OK. Like has been said it is still probably less expensive to just put a turbo 617 in like I did.
Here is one kit that used a variable geometry turbo: http://www.hiperturbo.com/other_application.htm You could try to contact them to see if the kit is still available. Kits with standard turbos pop up on ebay from time to time.

If you live significantly above sea level, adding a turbo would be good to adjust the air back to sea-level pressure. The ADA on the non-turbo pump can work like a very limited ALDA. Slap on a KKK K03, T25 or GT17, set it at 5psi, run a line over to the ADA and you can have your full 62hp at any altitude. May even get better efficiency and burn cleaner because of the extra air available. VW did that with their EcoDiesel engines, turbo with no boost enrichment and non-turbo power.

But you probably would want to start with a sound engine. On a high mileage engine before doing that I would run a compression test to see how much compression you have.

I think I'll just leave the 240 alone. Its got 238K with no issues. It's a 4 speed with crank windows that was given to me by the original owner who knows how much I admire these cars. FYI....I've got receipts from day one! I was just looking for a power boost that would be easy to install.
If I want to feel the power I'll jump into the TD or the Power Stroke F250. Thanks for all the ideas. This is such a great forum and you guys make it happen. Cheers, Bill
