Then I have to see what parts I can cannibalize from the 79 for this car.

Oh, and I'm sure the sig line will change after a while. It's just the drive. The car does have potential.
Perhaps the leaked just caked up so much it sealed itself.... so that means when you power wash it, the leak will come back??

Wow

WOW (Women of Wonder, you and your daughter)

My hat is off to you. As a former owner of a Pizza Shop in Sarasota and a new owner of a 82 300SD picked up 2/5/08 and only driven 64 miles home to Jax, I am in awe of your courage and determination.

Very happy to hear you are home safe and sound.

Congrats,

Pacifico

...question is...was the "adventure" worth it? Would you do it again? What would you do differently?

Glad you and your daughter are home safe and sound. It would be fun to have your daughter write her impressions of the drive. Looking foward to pictures, do one of you and junior you by the car. As for the oil I had a car years ago that lost almost all its oil one day (you could see it dripping under the car) so I refilled it and never had it happen again and could never find an explanation for it so who knows. As I said before this was like when my daughter calls me asking what that noise is in her car and I'm in California and she is in Florida.

Well, enjoy the pizza. I'd say you've earned it!

Thanks for sharing your adventure with us, Ginny.

Good question.
I'm not sure just now if I'd do it again. I don't deal well with stress and the unknown. This isn't really something I'd do. I was fully expecting the DH to come along for the trip so I wouldn't be the adult in charge. I honestly think that Tom didn't come because HE was afraid and wouldn't have delt well with the obstacles. The drive would have been fine for him, but driving 1900 miles in an unknown car is something else.
I also think I would have had Rick go look at it before I paid for it.
I think the seller is never going to get out of the bad karma he had to have gotten allowing a mom and daughter to drive acorss the country in a car with a leak he HAD to have know was bad. He had a piece of plastic under the car and it had about a half cup of oil on it in drips. I didn't ask how long the car sat for the leak amount, but I've got to think that he topped up the oil just before setting out for the airport. He claims he drove it once a week so he would have known about the leak and how bad it is. The cardboard that he would have had to have under that car so the car didn't soil the garage floor. . .he's a big fat liar.

As for doing differently, I would have packed a set of bummy clothes for working on the car. I'm hoping to get the grease stains out of my favorite jeans. They are on their second wash right now. But that's about it.

Angel was sad the last day. She claims she had a great time and she was sad to see it all end. Which makes me feel better. At least my stress wasn't freaking her out.

Just checked oil again and added 1.5 quarts. I'm going to get a piece of cardboard and put it under the car and check in a few hours. I'll post that pic too.

Magnificient. With this ending, I am well pleased. I'm completely baffled about the oil leak though.

Could you do this again next week? We all need something to do........but enough about us....sleep some more and start spinning some pizzas, we'll be here when you get back.

And yeah - we need some pictures of the newest addition.

YES, I'd do it myself but I've already got grease on my hands.
Or just break a thumb would be good.

Well, that's something. That was part of the original objective, IIRC. A Thelma and Louise experience.

I wonder if I would have been able to spot the leak, had I been given the opportunity. I might have sent you into the valley of death anyway.

I must say, I was suspicious, given the broken odo, the references to oil blowby fixes about an oil issue. How clean was the engine when you first saw the car? Re-reading the ebay description the other day I noticed the seller did say soething about removing and cleaning out that banjo bolt ( he didn't say what he did with it).

Anyway, glad you are back safe to write about it.

Rick

We definitely had a T&L experience.
I'm glad she had fun. It would have been really bad to travel with a whiny teenager.

as far as a visual on the leak...my wife's 300D leaks pretty badly from probably the front crank seal and maybe the oil pan (also the tranny AND the diff cover for good measure). So much so that we have one of those big tin oil pans on the garage floor. But- it only uses maybe a quart in 1500 overall, so its hard to tell on the spot if its a nuisance leak or a dangerous leak. That something only the seller really knows.

I had a miserable ebay experience on my Citroen. I bought a California car, but its a rustbucket and I'm sure the seller knew it. No more long distance transactions for this boy.
