Oil Change Horrors

Ok so the first time I changed my oil in my 300D I was in a hurry and didn't thing anything of it. The second time (today) I changed the oil I am giving anything a good once over, and to my horror what do I find? In the oil filter housing I find more or less a garbage dump. Three big o-rings, two filter grommets that seal the top side and COPPER WASHERS!!! My only question is what were these people thinking? I fished around with a pick to get everything out, lets hope I didn't miss anything.

My horror story happened at a large chain dept store that does auto repairs (Not Sears)... They left the Oil filler cap on the air filter. After they said my car was ready I always check the oil level, sure enough the cap was off... Walk in got the service manager. He came out. Said sorry and offered me a free oil change next time. I said thanks. No thanks. I'll do it myself.

You should have driven it and then they could have bought you a new engine.

YOU pay for them to do the job.

(a simple job.)

NO leeway should be given if it's messed up - as posted above.

oh that's nothing.
the mercury sable wagon I got had just been to the jiffy lube to get It's oil changed, and they claimed they could not get the drain plug out... so the owner drove the car home and sold it to me, I drive away from the house, and the idiot light for oil pressure comes on. I pull over immediatly since I just paid 700 bucks for a car, and had my girlfriend bring me a quart of oil. then drive to a gas station and proceed to put 4 more quarts in!!!... apparently they took out the plug, drained the oil, then stripped it putting it back in and claimed it would not come out... no damage done to the motor, but JEEZ!!! I am glad I do not need oil change places...

I'm a marine engineer and you never know what you'll find in an engine. We took a ship into refit and climbed in the crankcase and found a timber 2"X 10" about 8 feet long. I guess the previous workers had been using it as a seat or platform. It had probably been there 4 years. There was not what I expected in the way of wood deterioration.

Speaking of those washers, I notice I get a silver and brass one with each filter, (Mahle filters) but never have seen a use for them, what are they for and should I have been using them? I never found any originally on the car so I never use them.

They are for different applications. They are included so that one filter product can cover multiple model ranges.
