You just have to read this ad.
Nice pictures & nice car; but read the copy on this super rare "300sdtd"; "That cost $40,000 more than a Rolls Royce" "Museum quality" "Ultra Rare" Rare, rare, rare,.... AND the 'million mile' mark is mentioned. This ad copy is beyond words. |
It ain't bad.......;)
|
What a line of bull! Apparently the Rolls-Royce was free in 1980, ... and the rarity of that car had nothing to do with the cheap fuel in 1980 and our fascination with big cars that had V-8s. Did you see his super rare 1985 300D in another ad? Did he move to AZ from St. Petersburg, FL? LOL
|
This guy was on another MB forum recently asking about the value of this car.
|
pumpkin colored interior??? wtf
reminds me.. I need some new keys |
Not a California "blue plate special"
3PGY745 is a California alphanumeric plate that would have been issued in 1997.
So where in the hell was the car before that: in the rust belt, or did it have a collision, personal plates or what excuse is there? The guy has fallen in love with his own prose. Meh. |
the ad is a bit verbose, but hey sales is everything.
I would LOVE that car. AZ is THE place to find one of these (as long as it was garage kept) ... were palm trees native to AZ?... that leather sure does look great. Steering wheel pristine, dash great. WEIRD angles for the pictures... like a super model photo shoot or something... I predict ending bid in the 6K range. |
Appears to have a tear in the driver's seat backrest too, only shows in one photo / obscured in the others. Was 'Tex available in the '80 SD or is this leather?
|
He talks about how clean the car is under the hood, but I guess the battery in his camera died before he could take some wierd pictures of the "cleanest diesel I've ever seen".
|
Is "unordinary" even a word?
|
Nobody ever called an S-class a "300-series" either.
Mercedes called the W124 that for a bit, prior to settling on E-class. North America was the ONLY market for ANY version of S-class W116 diesel. Rather than how pretty it is, something about service records is more useful for a Mercedes this old. Especially how recently the transmission was rebuilt and how recently the HVAC system was repaired. |
Second ad I've seen today, stating "it is reported that Jay Leno has one in his collection". Jay's probably got over 100 cars, I'm sure he's got one like this in there somewhere.

The keys turn like butter? Only if they aren't refrigerated :)
I thought all 80 SDs came with a passenger side mirror. Seller doesn't provide a VIN but I'd say that's tex. Close-ups of the grain don't show the random creases you see in leather. Sixto 87 300D |
I think this guy is a Benz neophyte that picked this car up for a decent price and thinks he has a windfall on his hands.
It looks to be a pretty nice example assuming the mechanicals are in order. But based on what he had posted on another thread it looks like he's hoping to get something north of $10k for it. That would seem very optimistic to me but it is "museum quality" so you never know. :) BTW my 80 300SD did not have a passenger side mirror when I assumed ownership 8 years ago. I pulled one off of a 450 SEL at the the junkyard and slapped it on mine. |
did MTV take those photos? not a one of them is straight!
