can someone post pics for me on this page?

I've got 4 pix of my son's 240D which had the runon condition the other day. We could not shut it down. From what you folks said, I'm thinking it's vaccuum related. Can I ask someone to take an em from me and post the pix here?
Mike

It does sound like a vac leak somewhere. Does the engine shut off via the stop lever located under hood near the valve cover? If so, this would indicate the valve is working, just not being "told" to engage. You may be able to plug the door locking check valve (yellow) near the firewall.
To post pics, go to the Attach Files section, Manage Attachments, and follow the prompts. Be forewarned, there is a size limit, so any pics you take, use the smallest setting on your camera before you shoot.

2many,
there is No shut down lever on this car. It was removed or it's totally hidden. A pic is worth a lot. I'll try to post the pic myself. I've never had much luck putting a pic on a message board, but I can em them.

240 D pix missing vaccuum lines etc

Here's two other shots of the same 1985 Euro 240D. No shut down lever in sight. Lots of open vaccuum lines. I love to get a pic of another 240 plumbed correctly. If you enlarge the shot, and look closely, the two units to the rear of the injection pump are missing vaccuum lines. the rearmost one has an open line on top and at the 6 oclock position. the round unit to the left of it,(foward on the car) is missing a line on the unit also at the 6 o'clock positon. And a lot of open lines coming from the firewall. I know I knocked loose the purple line, but dont' know about any others. surely one of these is my runon problem.

the second pic youposted, has a open vacuum line. and a white device that should be put in it. that ought to fix your shut down problem.

if you're looking for the fuel shut off valve - it's on the back of the IP, under that vaccuum dashpot (which looks to be disconnected - the white, cylindrical thingy). I could be wrong though.

On my 240D - the manual stop lever is up on the throttle linkage, atop the valve cover

also, I just HAVE to say, that looking at that mess of lines and incorrect vacuum connectors really hurts my eyes... if it were mine I would go to MB and order a set of vacuum tees and x connectors correct for the car. and reroute them properly. (actually, if it were mine, I would just go to one of my parts cars and swap over what I needed... but I digress)

I agree John, much sorting out is required there. Unfortunately, I don't have a pic of my 240 engine compartment here at work.

Am I wrong about the fuel shut off connection? I really thought it comes at the top there, just above where you circled in light blue (forgive me, I'm colorblind).

I agree though - stuff is disconnected and pushing on the linkage should duplicate the manual lever.

I also don't think you had a runaway diesel, as you indicated before.....your problem is obviously in here.

this I think should work as a stop lever, not sure why it is not labeld with a stop sign

First, does that look like a Euro IP? Hmmmm.....
Also notice how the Vacuum Control Valve for the tranny is not hooked up. And there is a 3/2 valve on top of the valve cover. Tranny line goes from one of those straight to the tranny. So, VCV is not being used. Car has Bowden cable.
Minimike, how does the transmission shift?
The brown line going into the firewall is for the shutoff. The two yellow lines have to do with the door locks. Not sure what the purple one is, but I would assume for the climate control. You can plug open vac line to yellow lines {pictured} Notorious for developing leaks in the system.

Also, above in aqua, is that fitting off the hard vacuum line open or plugged? That would be a huge vacuum leak if open.

Can't read much of the notes above, but as mentioned in posts above that marked in yellow is your shutoff lever. Push towards valve cover.

Vacuum fittings don't have to all be routed and plugged exactly a certain way. Main objectives is first, no vacuum leaks. Second is getting vacuum to various components within the car. The only part that gets more complicated is the varying amount of vacuum that the tranny uses to shift. When you plug your vac leaks I can't imagine the tranny shifting the same as it is doing now, whether that is good or bad....

the sticker probably fell off or was peeled off because it was worn. I have the same issue.. You can order the sticker from here or the dealership
