Snapped glow plug removal 606 THEORY

I was looking at the line drawing of the 606 engine on page 157 in Stu Ritter's book. Let's say one removed the injector and filled, through the prechamber, the cylinder with a liquid like carbon cutter. (Carbon Cutter is used to clean fouled machine gun parts). Even if you had to fill a cylinder in the down position, it wouldn't be very much volume. Now, lets say you let the carbon cutter sit in the cylinder for an hour or so. It might attack enough of the carbon on the glow plug tip to allow it to move. You could remove the carbon cutter from the jug with a vacuum pump, or even a mityvac. Of course you would change your oil after.

Is success with this proposal possible? What are the dangers? Is a cylinder watertight enough to hold the carbon cutter for an hour? I dont' know.

if its noit watertight enough you can always put a little gear oil or something real thick in there, then poor the carbon cutter intop of it and hope it just doesnt thin out the gear oil enough to slip past

I've uses trans fluid to test rings in the past, something about that viscosity should hold for a few days or weeks at least on a good engine.

Is Carbon Cutter safe for use with aluminum?

I sent an email to the company to find out if carbon cutter is safe for alum. Let's assume for the sake of this discussion that it is safe. Or, lets discuss using diesel fuel or trans fluid.

I'm curious to hear from those who have removed glow plugs if after soaking with PB Blaster or Kroil or some other penetrating oil, if the carbot tip was wet. Looks like those that break and get drilled appear dry.

I remember folks saying they soaked their soot infested intakes in B100 w/ good results. I'd feel ok about filling up the the cylinder w/ bio.

Cleans the prechamber as an added bonus.

How do you propose to make sure you remove all the fluid before you start the engine? Sounds like a case of hydro-lock waiting to happen.....

if the injectors and the GP are out you can probably just blow the fluid out with compressed air.

While B99 is a good solvent, I dont feel it is THAT good

When doing DV's, I completely filled my IM and soaked it 24hrs hoping to get rid of all the gunk in there on the 99. It loosened the outer surface but didn't penetrate deeper and release it from the metal. Took hours of spraying and scraping to get the rest out.

Thorsen,
Good point. I'd use my homemade "topsider" that uses a 12vdc pump to remove the fluid in the cylinder. Do you suppose a residual amount of diesel or b99 in the cylinder would present a problem upon start up? Maybe working on one cyl at a time would be safer?

I don't think you would be able to. It is a pre-chamber engine, so your hose would not get past the pre-chamber. The fluid would drip out of the prechamber into the cylinder and I can't see how you would be able to get it out. I think a few drops wouldn't hurt anything, but for the process you describe I fail to see how you could remove enough of the fluid.

It's just one of those bad designs, like the w210 spring perches or the 1995 wiring harnesses.

On the 606, with the injector removed, is the piston visible?

The injector sprays into a prechamber, not into the cylinder.

but is the piston visible when the injector is out? If so, then my pump tube can reach it.
