Re-plating engine compartment components

Hey All,

I have a perfect 240D and 300CDT. Both are trophy winners. The engine compartments bother me. The zinc/cadmium plate has worn off allot of trim and brackets. I recently found a web site that sells kits and everything else needed to re-plate metal.

So here is my question: Anyone out there have a picture of brand spanky new 4 or 5 cylinder diesel engine? I will use that to indicate which pieces to re-plate.

By the way this web site: http://www.caswellplating.com also carries anodizing equipment. This may be useful on our aluminum trim.

Thanks very much,

Zill.

ForcedI,

Thanks. That’s about what I thought was plated. So when I get all this re-plated I‘ll send you a couple of shots. Don’t know if I want to pull the AC lines.

Zill.

Wow, that's a clean engine compartment. I'd like to achieve that one day when I've gotten all the other stuff done that is more pressing. Great job!

How does it stay so clean with no lid on the PS reservoir?

Zill, have you considered anodized finish paint? Might be easier/cheaper if all you need is a little touch up. I think Eastwood sells it.

Just be sure to not let any on the inside of the injection lines.

Thanks forced induction for posting pics of my engine.

It's not a new engine - those pics were at about 200K miles. It now has 242K miles but looks the same.

It's a Texas car (no rust) and I use simple green degreaser exclusively and have spent a LOT of time cleaning stuff my hand (careful of stuff like purple lightning - some of the degreaser stuff will etch aluminum! ).

As you fix stuff on your car and you have parts off your engine - clean the part and all the new places you have never been able to access before. Fix those leaks and then maintenance is very very easy once you've got a baseline of a clean engine. I basically just knock the dust off about every three months or so, or, if I'm going to bring the car out for a get-together.

Yes, I found this out the hard way. Now, instead of shiny, I have dull grey.

As previously mentioned, this site has this product that has peaked my interest:http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/albrite.html
