Valve Cover cracks

What causes the valve cover on the OM617.95x to crack between the oil fill hole and the crank case vent hole?

Can they be welded shut by an aluminum welder?

I can take a pic. If you look at the top of the valve cover, it's between the oil filler cap and the line that runs to the air cleaner. It is a single crack, looks like metal fatigue. It has been like that since I have owned the car. I was just wondering what causes it.

China's valve cover has small hairline cracks also. It doesn't apparently go all the way through......
It's about like your's Ralph, but in a different place.

Jimmy, I remember you pointing that out when you helped with the UCA replacement. I got curious. When I see China again, please point them out.

Very odd. Are the cracks visible inside as well?

Mine warped

Several years ago the valve cover on my 83 300D had to be replaced by the indy doing a valve adjustment to control a leak that developed. He picked up one from the local bone yard.
If it could warp, it could crack. I wonder if either are caused by improper tightening sequence or contamination in the seal? Just a thought.

I also have a cover with a crack in the same place. one is an inch long, and the other is 1/4 in long. both are from the vent tube and on the outside edge. the 1 in goes towards the rear and the 1/4 forward. they both start from the base of the tube.
can`t tell if the crack is on the inside since the vapor sheet metal piece is in the way.
I bought this cover from pick n pull & didn`t see it with the dirt on it. I have been in the process of polishing it, It`s going to look good.
I have a welder I use, I`ll see if he can weld it.

FWIW. The 617.951 I rebuilt in 2004 had an oozing crack from the oil fill hole to the breather hole - all the way. I flushed it with isopropyl and trike, then pried it open just enough to get some high strength epoxy in it. 30K and 4 years, not a drop of seepage yet.

I second the epoxy. I repaired a cast iron hot water radiator in my house with epoxy 19 years ago. It is still holding fine.

There are also products available to weld aluminum with a propane torch. I've made a number of aluminum saddles for my canoes with one of these products and the welds have never broken.

Probably a combination of heat stress and overtorquing the nuts.

Wow I'm surprised, they are not exatly a stressed part. Probably years of vibration.

I would just epoxy it, until a good deal on a junk yard cover comes along. A lot of these cars are junked, you can probably snatch a good one for damn near free.
