Please help Identify this? 1980 300D
My benz sounds like crap can soneone tell me what they think it is???

It's rather interesting.
It doesn't have the dull thud of a main bearing or the rap of a con-rod bearing.........there's a soft sound added to it. Just for the hell of it, crack open each injector..........in sequence..........and see if the noise goes away when one cylinder comes off line. The engine will shake a bit, but, you're only interested in the sound..........does it disappear..........or not.

Could it be the vacuum pump?

The first thing I thought of was an exhaust leak. Check for that, and if it doesn't turn up anything, try the injector cutout test.

It souds like it could be a rod knock, but I'm hoping for a broken vacuum pump making that racket!
