Hey folks, new member. And a question.

Just a quick introduction:

My name is Ron, I reside in San Francisco and I work on Haight St. I drive a 1984 300TD wagon with 280K miles, and just kinda happened upon this site while I was trying to find some help.

So the problem I'm having with my car is that when i get down to the last quarter of the tank, the car begins running really awfully, as if there is no fuel at all. Once I get to a station, I don't have to buy a full tank of diesel, because there was still plenty left. But as soon as I fill up, it's running fine.

I was experiencing this problem today, and at most, I could only put in 11 gallons.

Thank in advance.

I would suspect a dirty fuel tank strainer.

Sounds like you could have a fuel tank venting problem. Instead of adding fuel next time, try removing the fuel cap and reinstalling it. Then see if there is any improvement.

First, welcome...
on to your problem- it could be a clogged tank strainer. it is on the bottom of the tank, you will want to drain the tank before you remove it. if you do a search on this, you will find more info than you ever cared to read...

You may be able to clean and re-use, or you can order a new on from this site, among others. a new o ring would be wise regardless....

Welcome Bear_San. Since the question is already answered, I'll just ask you to post some pics of your wagon.

I vote for tank screen too. How's your fuel gauge? If your tank screen is clogged, your fuel sending unit may benefit from a cleaning too. Cars with these clogs usually need a banjo bolt cleaning on the ALDA too.

I think wagons are more susceptible to plugged screen problems because the tank sits flat rather than on its side.

Have your mechanic pull the plug on your tank and drain it throughly and clean the strainer. Diesel fuel and water combine over the years to form a sludge line. Below that line is mostly water. Because these cars last so long, it allows things like this happen. After the clean out, a yearly dose of some kind of "water out" will prevent future occurrences, especially in your climate. The Bay area is really good at condensation.

Based on the car running fine until about 1/4 tank, could the fuel supply and return lines be reversed? If the PO intentionally did that, he may have been trying to porlong the inevitable of changing the tank strainer.

possibility.

also- to remove the screen, I went to the hardware store and got a bolt w/ a head that fits the allen recess, and 2 nuts for the bolt. thread on the 2 nuts, and lock them together by tightening them against each other. then use this as an allen key for the strainer.

If you have a 1-1/16" spark plug socket, it will fit the tank strainer when used backwards on an extension like in the pic below:

I have never seen a 1-1/16 spark plug socket... 13/16 and 5/8 yes, but 1-1/16? what is that for?
