stumped...
we have an 88 ford f250 with the 6.9 diesel. with only one problem. The fuel injector pump doesn't want to shut off. There are no starting or running problems, other then when you turn the key to shut the truck off it doesn't...so I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on why the truck just doesn't seem to want to stop running (when it's supposed to)

When the Mercedes diesels do this, it's a vacuum line broken or disconnected, particularly the line that activates the fuel shutoff.
Does your truck have something similar? |

Your '88 should have a 7.3, not a 6.9. The fuel cutoff on these engines is electronic. Check out www.thedieselstop.com for a good Ford Diesel Forum.

I am going from my 1986 knowlege. If you can see 2 electrical terminals comming out of the top of the IP cover; that is the shutoff solenoid under the cover. There shoud be a short wire/jumper strap from one terminal that goes to one of the pump cover screws and is the ground for the solenoid. The other terminal should have the (+) wire that goes to the ignition. As one of the members indicated when the solenoid dies it is supposed to shutoff the engine (fuel).
First make sure that when the ignition key is in the shutoff position that the (+) terminal on the IP shutoff solenoid is not getting any current to it. If it is getting current when the key is in the shutoff pisition you do not have a IP pump problem you have an electrical problem in your ignition circuit. If the (+) current to the solenoid stops when the key is shutoff you have a problem with the shutoff solenoid itself. Like most solenoids this one has a spring. This one has a spring with a hook on each end that runs over the top of the solenoid it and attatches to the solenoid shut off lever. If that spring is broken or some how came loose the lever cannot push the pump rack into the shutoff pisition. I think there is 2 choices: Remove the top pump cover (and hope it has no tamper proof screws on it) and remove the solenoid and have a look at the spring (but when the cover is put back on there is a tecnique to slide it back on it will no go straight down when you put it on). Put another remote fuel shutoff soleniod on the fuel inlet line.

I found this pic and an site that tells you how the pump works.
The pic shows the top cover of the pump with the shutoff solenoid inside. This is how the solenoid would look in the shutoff position (the spring pulling the silver lever forward) the silver arm pushes on that part that is attatched to the head of the pump. ![]() The site: http://www.oliverdiesel.com/tech/howdb2pumpworks.htm

If the spring on the top of the solenoid is broken or detatched it cannot pull the shutoff lever into the shutoff position.

I had lick by tapping on the top of the IP with a screwdriver handle. It came loose and started working, so I really pored soem standyne(sp) cleaner in it and it worked for a long time. I assume it was just gunked up. Also changed the filter.
