Noisy annoying sound from the rear.

Ive always had a noisy rear in my 300d. With no weight in the car, its fine, but today when i put in 4 bags of mulch, it was soooooo annoying. It went from sounding like i was on smooth pavement, to the roughest road with tires filled with granite. When turning to the right, it goes away and is smooth again, but when turning to the left it gets even worse. Its heard as much as its felt. Doesnt really translate to the steering as much as its felt from under me.
Things ive replaced- sway bar, links, shocks, new tires.
Anyone have any clues to what im dealing with?

Sway bar links make rattling noises over small bumps. Bad shocks will make the rear end really bouncey.

I'd investigate the half shafts. Make sure the boot are in good shape, no cracks or tears. Also check the center bearing on the driveshaft.

Boots are in great shape and bearings check out fine as well. Sorry, should have mentioned that as well. Ill check the half shafts next.
If the center bearing on the driveshaft was bad, wouldnt it be apparent when unloaded as well?

The CV joint can still go bad if the boots are good. Also the PO could have replaced the boots only without doing the rest of the job on them.

Sounds very much like a bad RR wheel bearing. Sounds like a mud&snow tire on the freeway, swerving right-left changes it. Might last a while, might not. It won't necessarily get hot, nor will it have play, but the bearing is bad.

I replaced the sway bar links not long ago. They are fine. The bearings are about a year old. Just before i bought the car, the po had his mechanic in Houston put in new bearings, half shafts and boots. Whether he did new cv joints...i dont know. but this really sounds different than bad cv joints. Louder and harder feeling than snow tires, but not as menacing as cv joints.

My TE had a rear wheel bearing go bad when the car was 2years old.

If you can accelerate and let off the pedal and it doesn't change, it isn't CV joints. If it happens straight on smooth-level pavement, it isn't suspension. If you can apply and release the brakes (service and parking) without changing it significantly, it probably isn't brakes.

If it is sensitive to swerving left/right, and to changing load in the trunk, it is almost certainly wheel bearings. New Chinese bearings have had a full life it they're a year old.

I sometimes have that, too. Sometimes it comes from the rear. Sometimes it comes from the passenger seat in the front. I just make her get out and the problem is solved. . . .

I'm sorry. When I read the header, I just couldn't resist. I'm getting geared up for the weekend. Have a great one, everybody!

I've had two 124 rear-wheel bearings go bad so far, both times it was not detectable with the weight off of the wheel, no play and no noise, but put weight on it, ... I'm voting for the RR wheel bearing.
