injector leaking! new prob!

Hi Again-
Thanks everyone for comments on my injectors. I lapped the injector housings (as 911 DIESEL suggested) . I torqued them to 60 FT POUNDS.
I installed them into my engine at 60 FPs with new crush washers.
The engine is on blocks in my garage. I started the engine up and it ran pretty good. I shut it down and had to do a few adjustment to check oil pressure.
Three out of four of the injectors did not leak. One did. It was the one I had to spend a lot of time lapping because the bottom housing surface was scored badly. Also the injector nozzle needle was broken at the back (as 911 Diesel suggested). I replaced the nozzle.
Anyway I started it up again and there came a very loud noise. Coming from the top of the engine. Could this be the injector failing again? I shut the engine down because the noise was so loud. Other than that it seemed to run OK. What do you think?

At least you had some luck.

In the first pic if you don't get that broken at the back part (that was the back end of the pintel) in the hole/indentation on the Spring Seat when you torque the Injector Nut you break off that part in the back.

It's safe to assume you calibrated the injectors considering how in depth you have went into switching out injector nozzles and lapping the inj. bodies.

Did it sound like a metal needle hitting an anvil? It could be some injector nailing/knocking coming from the leaking injector.

To be 100% sure, you should try doing a diesel cracking procedure to see which injector is the culprit.

It could be other things that I don't have the knowledge to cover... but cracking the lines can help you make a quick diagnoses.

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

Well at least you had some good luck to go along with the bad.

If you put the Spring Seat in wrong it breaks off that "part in the back" you were speaking of when your torque the Injector Nut down.
That part in the back needs to go into the hole/indentation/recess in the spring seat.
In the first pic I tried to show the indentation.

In the 2nd to right pic the red arrow points at that part they breaks off.
Buy the way I know that because I broke 2 in the 5 years I worked in a fuel injection shop. I got too much in a hurry and did not pay enough attention to what I was doing.

I am not sure of the cause of the noise.

When you hear some noise from the Engine it is a good idea to put a socket on the end of the crank bolt and turn the crank with a breaker bar in the direction of normal rotation and see if there is anything that wants to stop it from turning.

Cracking, loosening the Injector nut while the Engine is running if everthing is good you should have a noticable loss of rpms and the Engine should run rougher.

If you do that to a bad cyinder there would be little or no differance in the rpms of smoothnes of the engine running. In other words cracking/loosening the Injector Nut would not have much effect if there is a problem on that cylinder.

If you find a problem on one cylinder you then need to find out if it is the Injector or something internal in the Cylinder.

You do that by removing the Injector from the bad Cylinder and swapping it with one of the Injectors from the good cylinders.

Then you repeat the injector cracking test. If the problem now has moved to a different cylinder then you know it is the Injector.

If the problem after the Injectors were exchanged remained in the origional suspect cylinder then there is some interna engine issue or there is a fuel injection Pump issue on that cylinder. However, Fuel Injection Pump issues are rare.

If it turns out the issue seems to be internal remove the Valve cover and have someone crank the Engine by hand an watch what is going on in the valve train. You are looking for broken valve springs or other broken or abnormal stuff in the valve train.
