Sprinter diesel questions

Recently a neighbor acquired a 2006 Freightliner badged Sprinter as an RV conversion. While looking the van over to famialiarize himself with the mechanicals, he noticed a strange set of coiled lines behind the fuel tank and wondered what these were for.

Also as a point of reference I understand that the engine is a 2.7L inline 5 cyl diesel. What is the model designation for this engine, and what passenger cars is it used in if any??

No idea on the coiled lines....are they metal or rubber?

As for the engine, I think the 2.7 inline diesel was only used in their trucks/sprinter vehicles. The newest sprinters now have the 3.2 liter V6 diesel that is found in the R-Class 320cdi, E320cdi, ML320cdi, and GL320cdi.

The OM642 V6 is 3.0L.

The 2.7L I-5 in the sprinter is either an OM613 or OM648 (what you have), depending on the model year. No passenger cars in the USA use them.

Ah, so the sprinters do have a different engine than the cars still. I will remember that.

No. The sprinters use the same engines as the cars do, except they are downrated in power to survive the extreme abuse of commercial drivers. The OM642 used in the Sprinter is physically the same as the OM642 in the ML/GL/R/E320 CDI except for software programming and external changes to fit the sprinter.

The OM613/OM648 was never used in the USA beyond the sprinter but it was used outside the states in MB's cars. It was even modified by AMG in the C30 CDI AMG.

This engine was used in C270CDI, E270CDI, ML270CDI, etc. in Europe.

It's a five cylinder version of the engine used in 2005-2006 E320CDI in USA and these engines have been around since 1999.

Daimler likes having the two model, i.e. 270 and 320 and therefore the 3.0 V6 is offered in two states of tune and cars are labeled 280CDI and 320 CDI. The Sprinter is in 280 tune.

I wish we had had a 270cdi in our car in germany! We had a 220cdi 6-speed stick and it could squeal the tires and hit the 155mph limiter! (on flat ground, after about 3-4 mins ) After 140-145mph it climbed very very slowly. Was around 4500+ rpm.....at top speed....

A coil such as you have described is often used to add flexibility to a tube connecting components mounted on significantly different structures, with unrelated natural frequencies and vibration modes. It is feasible this is the reason for the coil in this case too. The tank may be mounted to a section of frame that is going to be out of phase with the structure supporting the engine, and/or the injection pump.

It may also be used to increase the length of the tubing to tune out any pressure pulsations from either the pump or the injectors firing.

Thanks for all of the replies on this, a lot of interesting info on the CDI engines and their application. I did not get a very good look at the coiled lines back by the fuel tank, but there was a lot of it. Looked something like the pre-coiled blue plastic line that is often used on air lines in industrial settings for hooking up a hand held air blast nozzle. The material used on the sprinter appeared to be either metal or relatively hard plastic and was about 1/2" OD?!?

I have had a couple sprinters but did not hang on to them long. I resale a lot. I think the coil might be a diesel fuel tank warmer. Mercedes did that a lot on the newer cars around fluids under the hood as well.

Also one of the main reasons mercedes has different engine sizes is because in europe you are taxed on the engine size. Here are not but don't tell a al gore he might think it was his ideas and pass it off to washington.
