Late gear change
Hi Folks,
I've a 1981 W123 240D. I have the following problems 1) Engine wont cut out when ignition turned off 2) Gear changes in this automatic are very late as In I have to go to almost 60 mph before she will kick into 3rd! I bought this can in the uk and had a friend drive it home. On route he got rear ended by a taxi. The taxi I am told came out the worst from the encounter! However, I am now wondering if it is worth the while restoring this car. The car has rust damage in the rear wheel arches, the insides of all 4 doors. Should I consider this one a donor? 1. Vacuum leaks. Pull the vac line at the shutoff valve on the IP and check it with a mighty vac.
2. If the car has a bowden cable you will want to adjust it.

IIRC, the automatic is partly vacuum controlled, and less vacuum makes it shift later.
