Can I lube my manual sunroof without taking it out?
Can I open it, clean the slides, then apply sunroof paste - or do I have to take the sunroof and rails out?

I've lubed a power roof with it in the car, but have not done it to my manual roof yet. It should be similar though, just use a Q-tip to get the grease to the rail.

How much lube do you put in?
Do you goop it in thick, or just apply a thin coat on the surface?

Less is more, just a Q tip dab to the surfaces that come in contact with eachother.
When I replaced every part in my sunroof I didn't use a 1/4 of those tin's that Rusty sells to lube all the new parts. One of those little tins should last you 10+ years.

Cool, Thanks - I did it and it slides better, but I was hoping for it to slide like an ice skate - not quite there!

My automatic sunroof opens verrry slowly and kinda gets caught and stuck at about 1/2 open. Where do I buy this lube? Is that what I need?

Click on buy parts above and call or email Phil. He charges $18-19 for a 35mm film canister full, shipping incl. I have read that other vendors sell the same amount for 1/4 the price (but I think shipping is xtra), but I had other things I needed at the same tie, so I stayed with fastlane. Plus, it helps support this site ![]() I only have a manual roof, so I will leave the second question to others.....

I wouldn't think you would need to take the sunroof out to lube it. I certainly wouldn't ever take mine out again unless it was an absolute neccessity!

This usually means that the adjusting nut inside the trunk needs to be tightened. I do not have a pic handy but its either on the left or right side near the rear wheel well. There is a nut facing sideways or horizontally that controls the rod coming from the sun roof mechanism. Over the years, this gets loose. Tightening it will make the SR operate better.

The nut in the trunk is an adjustment on the clutch, but first make sure you are not dealing with a very stiff mechanism and/or teleflex cable. Otherwise you'll burn out the clutch/motor. Jim

I just used a Silicone spray lube sprayed on a Q-Tip and lubed the rail and everywhere I could reach. It went from stiff to smooth in 2 minutes. If it's open during a hard stop, it will self-close!
