240's are loud when the muffler falls off

I was coming home today after work, just cruising down US29 and the pipe connection between the downpipe and muffler broke in half. With no turbo to eat the noise, that rascal was loud! I was lucky that the hanger held it up enough to keep from pogo sticking until I could get off the side and tie it up. The rest of the drive home I sounded like a Mack truck. It's hard to believe that little 4 made so much racket.

very little CO in a diesel's exhaust...

as loud as the 240/300N/A motors are WITH the muffler, I am not surprised at all that they are loud without it...

OK, I fixed it last night with 6$ worth of adapters from Advance auto. The head pipe is pretty rusty, though, so I figured I should order a new one to have on hand for the next break. (the rest of the exhaust looks like new) I called around for prices on the head pipe and here is what I got. Local auto parts- not available-, Mieneke -$59- 4 days to order, Tuffy -$77- 2 days to order, local Mercedes parts dept, -$44- can have overnight. I ordered the MB one and we'll see what happens.

yeah this happened on my brothers car, it sounded like an old-timey airplane! it was great, setting off car alarms as we drove by...

if fixed it myself with a tin can and some hose clamps, it worked great! but we had it fixed properly with a new down-pipe, but i think it was actually quieter the way i had it.
