************** Door Check Straps are CRAP!!!

4 Attachment(s)
I had my door panels off today so I thought I would install the door check straps I got from ************** awhile back. I pulled the old strap out of the passenger door and noticed that the new straps were a different design and use a bolt for the rear mounting point rather than a stud. No problem, I got a bolt and installed the passenger door strap just fine.

I then pulled the driver's side strap and tried to install the new one. I could not get it in to place properly due to the plastic case on the new one hitting a bracket in side the door. No problem again, I just pulled off the plastic case. (picture 1) When I put the strap in I noticed that it did not seem to "seat" tightly against the inside of the door, but I got the bolts to go in fine. When I went to put the pin back in the end of the strap I noticed a bit of a problem (picture 2).

I pulled the strap again and looked inside the door. I noticed that the reinforcement plate inside the door has a certain shape to it that the new straps do not seem to fit. The face of the stock straps are more squared off, while the new straps are not, and therefore do not fit the inside of the door properly. (pictures 3 and 4)

I gave up and put the old strap back in. At least I got the passenger side one replaced. Now I won't have to hear my wife complain about the door hitting her in the butt.

Isn't that OEM? Is there a difference between the 123 and 124 strap? Maybe you got the wrong one from them. It sure looks different than the original one you took off.

And I've been saying what about ************** for a long time?

A. You love'm
B. You like'm
C. You hate'm

Or something about them being a ripoff.

The originals do not have a name brand on them, just a MB star and 123 part #.

You can see that they are a totally different design. The old ones use a leaf spring and rollers and the new one uses balls with springs.

I've never been a big ************** fan, but they were the only game in town for the bolt on seat adjustment handle replacements and I figured while I was at it I may as well get some door straps...mistake!

Which car was this for? I think the straps were designed differently depending on year model of your W123. On mine they look exactly like the new one, except I got OE MB not Meyle which I heard is pretty subpar quality.

While I was at it I took the liberty to pain the new strap with the touch up paint I have, let it dry and installed it nicely. Looks original too :)

This was for the '79

The ones you got from ************** were the same ones I got from Fastlane and they worked fine. Maybe you need an earlier design.

I bought a check strap for my 85TD from Phil a few weeks ago. There are two different designs, early and late. Fastlane's catalog shows the chassis number when the change was made. The ball version is the late version I think (at least that is what was in my 85. You probably need the early version.

I'm not a ************** fan either, but if this part was made by Meyle rather than something ************** fabbed, you can't really blame them for it...

I pulled 2 of the old style (leaf spring type) from my '80 300d parts car and replaced the broken new style (spring and ball type) in an '84 300d, they fit fine.

After 1980, basically when the W126 was release the equipment in the W123 was updated to harmonise the inventory items.

The strap you have in your W123 "1st edition" (as they call them in germany and france) is different than the roller ball design you have in 2nd edition W123.
I personally replaced all the later door checks in my cars with older models from Pick and pulls. I am not sure but i think the only model available at the dealership and everywhere else are the rollerball design and not the leaf-spring.
