Intro and coolant question

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, and have been skimming around for a few hours trying to come up with a concise answer to my question about coolant: which is the proper type for a '79 300D, non-turbo?

I picked one up for $600 on Friday. This is my first diesel and first Mercedes. It needs some TLC, however I'm very happy with it thus far.

I'm not sure what kind of coolant is currently in it, which makes me want to flush it out and put in some fresh stuff. I've been searching various sites and surfing in general and can't seem to find a specific and definitive answer to this question.

My understanding thus far is that my '79 300D has 617 model engine; iron block and head. Does this mean that I can use the regular green stuff or do I need to use G05 for other metals and plastics? Do I need an SCA additive to prevent cavitation?

I'm hoping to receive an answer along with an explanation of why it is so.

Thanks a lot everyone, and nice to meet you all.
