no tach amplifier on fender well
84 300D I have no amplifier on drivers side fender well-tach not working. As far as I know I've never had a amplifier on fender well. Tach has worked in the past. When looking at what parts to buy to fix, I noticed 2 choices amplifier or an inductive sensor to bellhousing on trans. Seller was giving me a choice. After going under car to look, there was a wire going to bellhousing that was cracked with insulation peeling off. Does this take the place of a amplifier on fender well?

The 84's take the signal from the transmission, so there was never an amp.
Search OVP relay and check the fuse, I forget which one, but it's on the card. You don't need either item you discussed.

OVP relay
On Ca. 84 300D's there is no tach, but a fuse on top of OVP relay, which is inside right kick panel. OVP relay is red capped with the 10amp fuse mounted on top.

I dont want to start another thread, since we are talking about tachometers, i should hijack this one :
I got a 1987 300D Turbo Diesel, and when I 1st crank the car, the needle for RPM twitches/jumps little bit and after I start up the car, it stays down (like its dead). You guys mention about the rpm thing is in the transmission, is it in my car or no? what about the amplifier? do i have it or no? thanks for help guys!

Your '87 is similar to the late 123 cars: it uses a pickup to sense rotation (rarely fails), an amplifier that's part of the EGR 'brain,' and the tach itself. The EGR brain gets its power from an over-voltage protection relay (OVP) that has a built-in 10 amp fuse. In your car the OVP is located in a little instrument compartment behind the battery (remove a plastic panel to access). If the fuse has blown or the OVP has failed, no voltage, no tach.

Mark, I have the same issue. My car is an 84 300TD. No tach amp and no OVP relay since it is a federal and not California. I have a couple of threads trying to troubleshoot this but so far can't figure out what to look for if I don't have either of those common problem components. I sounds like your car is a similar setup. If you find a solution, please post here and I will do likewise. I'd love to get my tach working!

The fuse wasint blown unfortunately... im guessing that the device itself in the transmission has failed...
I think its located really close to natural safety switch which is on driver side on the side of the transmission.... its going to be a ***** to get to... well nothing is easy in life now is it? So basically I need to get the NSS (natural safety switch) + that rpm thing from junkyard... because my car can only start from natural not parking position... byronnash: like i said... it might be that the device has failed that records the rpm... good luck...
