Hello,
I need help to test the tachometer for my 1985 300d. How much voltage can I run to test the tachometer if it jumps or not. Thanks for the response. |

Good question. The '85 is a different beast than the prior years.

Don't use even the smallest battery directly connected to the tach -- use an ohmmeter. They send a small current through whatever resistance you are measuring, that's how they work. Use a low scale (1000 ohms or so) as that will have the lowest voltage. The ohmmeter will measure the resistance of the meter coil (infinite = bad tachometer) and will make the tach needle "bounce." Try touching the test leads gently at first so that you don't pin the tach (drive it up or down against the stops) and damage it. If you have the ohmmeter connected "backwards" the tach will try to move down scale rather than up. Reverse the leads to make the needle move in the correct direction. If you can get the needle to move then the tach is probably good.
