Transmission is Toast. replacement options?

Ok, so my trans is toast.

So what other cars could be a donor for my 81 300sd? Will a gas trans work, or only diesel?

Not looking to spend a bunch so its going to have to be a junkyard/craigslist deal. $500 car won't get a $2000 trans.

I just located an 86 300SE for parts. So will the gas engine trans work?

my bet is any trans from 81 to 84 SD will work if all you can find is 300D trans, you will have to swap over the tailshaft speedo and assorted parts.

Where are you located?

I just pulled the trans out of my 81 300SD for somebody else. If you want it you can get in touch with them...

Well, my $1900 ca got a new/rebuilt(needed hard parts) $3000 tans. Does that count? At least i have piece of mind. Like i really wanted to spend that kind of money but unless you get a used one, and break it down, you will never know what you have and if it will go in a few weeks or years. Of course this was an emergency situation and next time i will buy a rebuilt for about $1200 and do it my self.

I have an extra 300SD trans as well, if you're in the northwest.
I just picked up a parts car for the engine.

The gasser tranny will bolt up and work. At least on a 123 the're interchangible. The trannys are set up for whatever they are installed behind though and it will be set up to shift at gasser rpm appropriate points.

so for a diesel it will run the motor up to a higher rpm before shifting.

It will work but you will feel the difference and maybe not like it much.

So, if I were to get a 126 gasser trans and transplant my valve body, it should be the same? That I could do.
Already had the thing completely apart so I am not afraid of a switcheroo.

No The Gasser Will not work, the Gassers that came in the W123 all share the same bellhousing as the OM617, the Gassers that came in the W126s are V8 mostly. I do not know if the 300 SE trans will work. But the 380 SEL , 500 SEL will not..

there's a trans from a 300tdt here in NY on LI for $100.- the engine I think had less than 150K on it. Car rusted out. Why don't folks put their locations in their profiles?
