Vacuum line

While doing rust repair under and around the battery tray I accidently pulled a small black line [looks like a vac line] out of the bundle of wires that is routed along the pass side of the engine bay and enters the car though a rubber sleeve on the pass side of the firewall next to the battery. I tried sliding it back in to the hole it pulled out of but it is loose.
What is it and should it be a snug fit in the rubber sleeve or does it connect to a fitting inside the car?

Is this for the 240D? There should be numerous threads on vacuum lines you should be able to find something here. My gues would be that it is a climate control line. Have you had a loss of any functions?

I am just now buttoning the car back up after a bit of rehabbing so I will be able to test the deadheaded and disconnected lines tomorrow

It is attached to a unit that is also attached to an AC component mounted on the pass side engine bay just below and behind the rt headlight. It runs from thae unit through a rubber grommet and end up in the pass side under the dash. It is attached to nothing once in the vehicle and i could not see anything it might have been attached to.

that line is just a vent line to the cab. all it should do is draw in "cleaner" air into the vacuum system for some valves to last a little longer than if it were to inhale dirty air from the engine compartment. generally black vacuum lines going to the cab are vent lines.
