need help with transmission problem

She is an 85 300TD Wagon. I was taking my wife and kid out for grocery shopping. On the way back from the store, the car would only shift up in gear if i rev the engine up to 4000+ rpm. And it would not shift into 4th gear. Also, when I let go the gas pedal, it felt like the transmission is still engaging with the engine and pulls the engine rpm along with it. It's like when you are driving a manual transmission and left the clutch engage while letting go of the gas pedal.
I read the forum and checked out the car. I found the bowden cable to have a lot of slack. Basically, I can move it along the WOT range and it would stay where I left it. But it is not broken because I tried pulling hard on it and it would show a little tension the stop completely. I notice that the other end of the bowden cable is going to the side of the transmission and going inside it.
My feeling is that, whatever the bowden cable is pulling on, it is stuck at the position relative to the WOT position. I have already drained the ATF fluid and about to drop the transmission pan to have a look inside. Hopefully, nothing has broken yet. I've looked around forum but couldn't find any guide on how to replace the bowden cable. Is it neccessary to remove the transimission pan? Anyone ever had a similar problem with the transmission?
