I've got a W123 so why is my tranny a 126?
 

Hello,

I just replaced the K1 spring kit on my 300DT and while I was down there I noticed that my transmission had a 126 number in a few different places. Is this normal or does that mean that the trans was switched out with an SD trans?

If anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated because I'm not sure how much fluid to refill it with. I think I might have put too much in...

Normal factory parts bin sharing. Many 126 parts found themselves used on later 123s.

Did you drain the torque converter as well as the pan?
System capacity (turbo) 6.5 qts.

(If you only drained the pan then it will only take about 2 to 2.5 qts.)

OM617 turbo trans are the same except for the tailshaft.

The W126 has an electronic pickup, the W123 uses a mechanical cable.

Ok thanks, I appreciate the info.

I thought it seemed a bit odd and just wanted to check on that for future reference. The good news is the spring kit fixed my 2-3 flare up, now I just need to adjust the trans a bit to ease the shifting, it shifts kinda hard.

Numbers game
 

Mercedes numbers new parts for the first model to use that new part. Anything numbered 126 was first used in that model. When that same part is later used in another model, they keep the "old" part number. It also means that you can look for such a part in junkyard 126 as well as 123 cars.

Wow, you're not kiddin'! This weekend I should have some time to work on it again. I can't wait for smooth shifting...I thought I was stuck with a jerky transmission until I found this forum. The K1 spring kit was a pleasant surprise (only $12) that two different mechanics I talked to didn't even know about. This forum is a god-send...it's saved me lots of $$ and I'm having fun learning a ton along the way. Thanks again.

Well so much for the K1 spring kit fixing anything. My 2-3 flare up was gone for like 2 days then it came back, and now it's just a bad as ever...These transmissions are a pain in the ass!

That's true. I can find 123, 126, 129 and 201 part numbers in addition to the 124 parts on my 300D 2.5T.

For example, my washer reservoir has a 123 cap, a 124 tank and a 129 heat exchanger coil assembly ;)
