W210 220 cdi fuel pump

Hi
I'm on vacation and seem to have run into some diesel delivery problems.
When I opened the diesel filter canister in the engine bay there was just a small amount of diesel in the bottom of the canister.
This makes me suspect that a fuel pump might be failing. Does the W210 cdi's have a pump in / near the tank, or is it a suction system that relies on the pump on the front of the engine?
My fuse box lists fuse 6 as the fuel pump fuse, but there are no sockets and fuse in place 6.
I've filled up the canister with diesel and restarted the car after a few cranks. There seems to be a bit of air coming through as well but it is still running at idle after 15-20 minutes.
I'm kinda hoping these cars don't have a fuel pump in / near the tank, but I need to make sure before I continue my troubleshooting.
