Troubleshooting power steering

Power steering was working fine, but the fluid looked and smelled burned. So i changed it out, suctioned it all out, put in a new filter, and refilled with new fluid. Its still giving assist, but when i turn back from which ever way i just turned, fluid shoots out from under the wingnut holding the cap on.
Any suggestions?

It sounds like it is overfilled.

I thought so too, but driving and watching it today, it spewed every bit it could out. NOT just when it was full. now its as if there is no power at all. obviously since there is no fluid in there. i refilled it again, and its still doing the same thing. doesnt squirt when as i turn the wheel, but as i stop and turn back the other direction, it spews out fluid onto everything.

Air in system?

I've been fooling with the power steering on my other diesel (Ram) & they're sensitive to air in the system. Replace any component or drain & refill requires bleeding which involves raising the front end off the ground or disconnecting the pitman arm then turning steering wheel lock to lock until the air clears. You can ruin the valving on the steering pump by forcing a turn without enough fluid in the system. It's best to lift the wheels, turn the steering wheel without the motor running, recheck the fluid level, lock to lock a couple more times, recheck level, start engine & do it again. Have a helper turn wheel while you watch the fluid in the resevior. It should be obvious if you've over-filled.
