Looking at an '84 300TD
A friend called and asked if I was interested in her 1984 US-spec 300TD. It's been sitting for at least a year outside, dead battery, appears to have at least some rust.... I understand it's hard to start in the winter, so I'm guessing it's a combo of valve adjustment and/or glow plugs.
I have a 1983 300D, so I have some knowledge of W123 cars, but I know the Wagons are pretty unique and can be pricey to repair. I haven't seen the vehicle yet, but I'd love to hear advice about what to look for with this particular model. Thanks in advance. Doug |

Check the SLS out. That is a little costly. I've got an '84 and love it. It's really fun to drive. If this one just needs a little TLC, you'd probably be very happy with it.

The rear fenders seem to rust out because of water draining from the sunroof and getting into the body. I think you can check this by pulling out the spare tire and the tool kit to get to the inside of the fender.

Good call. That's exactly where the rust is in the pix. Thanks for that tip.

Rust on the rear fenders can also be from leaking quarter window seals, hatch seal, antenna seal, or tail light seals. Another cause for rust around the quarter windows is moisture trapping dirt collected behind the aluminum trim. Once the rivets that hold the trim on rot out, water can enter the fenders.
Also look at the rear floors under the carpets. The trailing arms to the rear suspension bolt to the rear floors, so holes and rust there could be a costly repair.
