1992 124 Turbo SMOKING

My 300 d 2.5 was smoking ( white/gray ) very bad and a total loss of power I removed the turbo and found the exhaust system with a lot of oil in it, I also found 2 broken studs on the ex manifold and the front ex port had black oil in the port.see attached photos:

Is my turbo bad? or do I have a blown engine?

Comparing the wet #1 exhaust port with the dry #2 exhaust port I'd say you need a new head gasket.

Carefully pinch the nut at the center of the compressor wheel. Don't cut yourself on the impellers! Move the nut side to side and in and out. There should be no in and out play and only perceptible side to side play. The comrpessor wheel should turn smoothly with minimal finger effort. Don't expect it to freewheel. If it passes these basic tests, I'd say clean it without taking it apart and hang it back on the engine after replacing the head gasket.

I'm not sure what the exhaust manifold looks like on your engine. Could the oily turbo have been leaking back into the manifold and #2 port when the car was off?

Possibly but why would it drain back to #1 (and maybe #3) but not #2? Also, I wouldn't expect it to drain back throughout the circumference of the port. Gravity would keep it off the upper surfaces.

I found the turbo is tight with no side or in out movement. Spins with no grind or roughness. What I am questioning is the amount of oil I found in the exhaust pipe this could not be normal. If the timing chain stretched would that cause the engine to knock very loudly, it always had a knock but got very loud when I stopped running it with the total loss of power.

That knock might have been a good thing to include in post #1.......
