rear view mirror loose

on my 85 300 CD the inside mirror is loose where it fastens to the roof. It seems like there should be a bolt to tighten but I can't find where it is at. I've tried pealing back the rubber cover but can't see anything. anyone got any ideas??

It's a break-away mirror - it has two little tabs, one on each side, that snap it into the bracket. Push it forward and it will pop loose, then you can tighten the bracket that it mounts to.

Have fun getting it back on. there must be some trick to it.

the way we did it, had my wife hold the mirror with one of the pins in the slot. then placed one of my rubber dead blow hammer handles against the mirror base on the oposite side. used a 3# dead blow and whacked on the head of the first hammer. took about 3 tries and it popped in.
only broke 3 of my wifes fingers.

Push it off toward the windshield, that is the official M-B method and what it's designed to do (I designed the EC 124 "speigelfuB").

The bracket on the roof that it's snapped into is held to the header with three screws, sometimes (rarely) they get loose.

With it down, look for two steel tabs on the roof bracket where the two pins push out. If someone had previously replaced the mirror and lost (or removed for easier mirror installation) one or both of those metal tabs the mirror will not fit tightly.

To re-install it is tricky, but do-able. I put the mirror in place with one side in, place the palm of my hand against the other side pushing upward, take my second open hand and hit my first elbow upward hard with my second palm. I found this method to work well for me when I have no tools or helper (and have removed/replaced more of them than I care to remember during early head-form/breakaway and vibration testing). Sometimes with enough ghusto (sp?) I could get it in place by just pushing upward, usually not with a new mirror but one that has been installed before (such as yours).

Good luck, and best to put a pillow or folded towel beneath it while you're trying so that a falling mirror (speigel) will not damage your console or itself.
