$$ I'll PAY someone to tell me my 300D SUCKS (vacuum)

I've been reading the posts about the vacuum system on cars like my 87 300D (209k), and MERCY ME! (hence my screen name). I like tinkering, but this is way out of my league. My tranny shifts pretty hard, though it's tolerable.

I'm pretty sure I have vacuum problems, because, for one thing, my rear headrests won't unlock, which I've read is a vacuum issue. I'm still working to solve my "squirrel cage blues", so I'm not sure if I have vent issues or not (just got the car a week ago). But it would not surprise me.

So . . .

Is there anyone close to the Triad (Greensboro) area of North Carolina that would be willing to test my vacuum system? Of course I would not expect this for free. There's no real urgency, but I really don't know who to trust, and as a member of this forum I really feel like a part of a big family.

Thanks for everything.
Troy

Im actually having the same question, I have a 1985 300sd california edition (i know) and i had a vacuum leak in my climate control which made my tranny shift horrible. So i plugged the line going to the cc system and now my tranny gets much higher vacuum around 16". From what Iv read this is a little higher and should be a little closer to 8". I got this figure from post #68.

It's CRITICAL... how you set your transmission's vacuum system on your diesel MBZ...

I went to the VCV, removed the dome and it was actually like a bolt rather than a screw. I tried to adjust this by turning it ever so slightly and it changed the idle rpm setting and the car immediately was idling at a higher rate. This made the vacuum drop to about 11" but the idle was wayy too high.

What am I doing wrong? I thought this might have been controlled by the alda not the VCV? How can i get my vacuum system to leak a little bit without changing the way my car idles?

p.s. My car kinda smokes a lot i was wondering if i could lean it out a little without adverse affects on power it seems like a lot of fuel isnt burning right

I have no idea. The consensus seems to be that I need to get a mity vac. I've never in my life had the need to test vacuum, but a lot of things change when one buys a classic MB--at least I think it's a classic. How old must an MB be to be considered a classic?

A vacuum adjustment of the VCV cannot affect idle. It's a physical impossibility because the diesel already has way too much air at idle.

Can you take a photo of the device that you adjusted and post it please?
