"typical" leaks on a W126 transmission?

If a W126 diesel has a leaking transmission (slightly), what is the most likely culprit? Seals or simply a gasket? I have owned two Mercedes (1984 190D and a 1985 380SE) and neither had transmission leaks.

I am looking at a 1987 300SDL (301K miles). Transmission shifts good (says the seller), but it has a slight leak he says. The car is out of state, but local to some relatives that live there and I was going to get my uncle to check it out for me, but if its going to be a major problem, I am going to pass. The guy that owns this car said that he has owned 4 different Mercedes diesels and all had transmission leaks.

Thanks.

You need to allow more than two hours waiting for a reply, especially this late at night.

Sorry, it was originally posted at 11:47 eastern time, which would make it 8:47 pacific time. I was just expecting a response faster I guess since it was not that late at the time... especially west of here. Sorry.

In my experience, it would be where the dipstick mounts to the transmission. it i s bolted to the transmission with a single hex bolt and uses a rubber gasket that can go bad. I would definitely check there first. then i would suspect the pan gasket.

Of the four I've owned, three 123's, one 126, only the SD leaked any transmission fluid. I did a filter and fluid replacement, with a new gasket, no more leak. So, as far as I'm concerned, no such thing as a normal leak. Make sure whomever does the work, properly torques down the pan, in the correct order.

Exactly, the front pump seal or torque converter input shaft seals can go, causing it to drool down out by the torque converter.....other seals can go too. Anything is possible at 300k. Mine was leaking when I got it at 207k....I had it resealed at 212k.....(shop replaced all seals, they said trans was great inside still, nearly new!) Now I'm over 274k with no leaks ever since, I change my fluid/filter/pan gasket once a year.

Every freaken seal on mine has leaked, and I have gotten 95% of them taken care of...just in time for a rebuild!

This trans has pissed me off so much with leaks I want to exchange it for another, and not rebuild this one...
