well, it hasn't punched holes in the block, and doesn't when I rev it hard when the oil is cold, I guess it could be an injector, just because I swapped them doesn't mean anything, but i'm still leaning towards a dead lifter, or an injector or something like that. (I guess a valve could be to tight even though I adjusted them)

Still cracks me up how folks rev these up quickly back and forth like they're a big block V8 or something......;)
Just doesn't befit a diesel for some reason.

It definitely sounds not good. Get a cheap mechanic stethoscope, narrow down the area in which the sound is coming from and report back.

Unfortunately

My Vote is:
Rod Bearing

That "Noise" is indelibly etched in my memory banks from a 617.951

It might run 100K or MORE...Or you might have a new "Fresh Air" entrance into
the lower block Tomorrow.

Sounds too high up for a rod.I think valve. But wtf do I know

I have 5 years and at least 40k miles on mine with a knock. Best I can figure without pulling the head is the knock is in the #1 piston pin.

Its easy to distinguish in this video.

Six of one, half dozen of the other.... it's all on borrowed time when suspect noises happens.

Marshall559 10-01-2008 12:24 PM

whether i'm on borrowed time or not, I guess it doesn't matter, this car needs to go to someone who will "enjoy" it, because i'm not going to enjoy it if I have to change the engine LOL... How possible is it to do an inframe on the engine? Can I just change all the bearings and call it good as long as it hasn't spun my crank or the piston rod i'm guessing... I notice this particular engine has two oil pans (upper, and lower) can you even get the upper off without pulling the engine?

DeliveryValve 10-01-2008 12:44 PM

Doing an inframe is nearly impossible. It is easier to remove the whole engine and do the internal work. The upper pan definitely easier to get off with the engine is out.

But before you start talking doom and gloom. You should narrow down where the noise is located. For it could be anything like a cracked flex plate, bad IP, and etc that may not require the motor to be taken out. Get a stethoscope and report back.

Alt bearings, vacuum pump, water pump, A/C compressor, clutch fan...check those as well. The mechanic's stethoscope is a good thing!

I will take your advice, thanks for looking on the bright side of things :) When I had all of the injectors out of the motor, I cranked it over and don't remember hearing the sound, but also the motor may not have been turning fast enough so I will use a stethescope and see.

My car made it thru 15hrs of 24hrs of Lemons with no air filter and that knock. 300k+ on the engine.

Marshall559 10-01-2008 06:40 PM

and then what happened?

I think it broke an axel.

winmutt 10-02-2008 10:40 AM

The race is really only 15hrs, 7.5hrs over 2 days. I think from the start of day 1 to end of day 2 is 24hrs. Lost an axle with 30 min to go.
