shop manual not what I expected

I got the service manual from MBUSA for $19.99+shipping yesterday.
I was really disappointed with some of the picture quality. you cannot make out what the pics are for the climate control. a lot of the engine pics are pretty bad as well. some wiring diagrams are so bad I can't see anything. does anyone else have this problem or is it this CD thats bad? or is that just the way it is?

I have the hard copy printed version (formerly known as books), as well as the CD version. There is no comparison. The books are orders of magnitude better. Much easier to find things, and much easier to read.

I bought the books back in '95 or '96, the CD last year (for the 124). The CD has some poor scans, but it is IMO so much easier to skip from one part to another in the CD, and I can do it with dirty fingers without damaging the CD, ... plus I remember spending at least $150 for the set of books.

I'm happy to have both, but the books seldom leave the bookshelf. The CDs are in the computer regularly (I often load one in each CD drive) and great for quick browsing.

Its only $20, they could have decided to charge much more for it or not offer it at all.

manual on CD

I thank all who responded. it does not however make a good coaster since it doesn't absorb coffee well. for $25 I guess I will get over it and use it where appropriate and add to it with other sources online.
IF anyone has the books for sale at a reasonable cost I would be glad to purchase them. thanks

The factory CD (2 disks) manual for the w124 is not awful, by any means.
The 'interface' is bad, flash-based loading of pdf files, but the data is all there.
I bought a british haynes manual for mine, also (ebay).
It is well done, like all their products..note they never sold a US version for the w124,
so you must get the euro book, hang out on ebay and you will find one.
Hopefully, you will never need either one! (read: Optimist )

You will feel a little better if you compare the CD manual by the volume of information given when compared to paying $16 new for Haynes or other manual. It also covers more models in detail.
You might notice something else. You see a lot of the Haynes and other common manuals on sale used; I have yet to see a used CD manual on sale.

Manuals I have
Mercedes books 1,2 Chassis and the CD 123 manual
Chilton and Haynes 123 books (Chilton bought used)
Mitchell CD manual (has covers more models of Mercedes over a wider range of years + some other foreign cars but info not as detailed).
Mitchell Engine service manual supplement for imported cars 1982
Of the above I use the Mercedes Factory CD the most (before I was a Member of this forum I paid $53 for the same manual that you paid the $20+ shipping for); next would be the Mercedes books.

It' Mercedes' online parts catalog and it's a free subscription. It does require you to enter a credit card to verify you live in the USA, not sure why the restriction. Great resource!

The pictures improve slightly if you print out the PDF file for the work order your using. Mercedes use to charge $120 for the CD. That's what I paid years ago for mine. Yes, the paper manual is so much better. I have all for my cars. BUT, print out the PDF file and Use it in the garage, when it gets covered with grease. Toss it.

For manuals try

And yes they are expensive
