Fuel leak at primer pump
Hi all,
The girlfriend's car ('85 300D) has a fuel leak right at the primer pump. It leaks slightly when the car is turned off, and is a pretty steady 2-3 drops/second when idling. No idea if its faster at higher rpms. It is dripping off the ip/lift pump assembly right below the primer pump, of course with these dirty old diesels its hard to find exactly where it is coming from. The primer pump is also not working correctly. It is the old style, and when I unscrew the plastic handle and pump, it squirts fuel all over the place around the plastic handle. My understanding was that when the lift pump fails, it fills the crankcase with diesel. The crankcase has a normal oil level so I think its fine. But I was not aware of the primer pump leaking externally, just not pumping properly, when it fails. I guess the primer pump needs replacing, but while I'm at it I'd like to fix the problem. Are there any other seals in there that give out upon occasion?
