Cruise Control won't go off 1985 300 TDT
Cruise control stops as long as the brake is applied, but resumes when the foot is taken off the brake so the car accelerates back up to the setpoint. I had this problem before and it went away when I found and reconnected a disconnected vacuum line under the hood. But then the cruise control was still surging some, so I resoldered it and found some loose solder joints in the process. Now cruise control is solid but does not want to terminate on brake application. I check vacuum lines again and found nothing obvious. Need a sleuth. Any help much appreciated.

Do your brake lights work? If the brake switch has failed, the cruise control won't turn off.
Can you turn off cruise with the control stalk? Jeremy

Don't let JimmyL see that Rogue 'T' on the end of your car description. You'll be lambasted in the nicest way possible.
All kidding aside, Jeremy is spot on. Check all your brake light bulbs. There is a pretty good write up about it at that place in Cali that rebuilds the amps and actuators. GDL or GDI or something like that. Someone with better short term memory will be able to tell you. Good Luck!

The brake lights do work and the control stalk can shut off the cruise control. ????

On the way home from work tonight, I found that for no apparent reason, that brake use is now terminating crusie control correctly. Weird - but I'll take it if it stays.

I would definitely check your switch. Im not an electrical engineer but im guessing that the "terminate" function on the CC amp is extremely basic and foolproof to prevent failure. I doubt its the amp

Googled the EGL write up. This should get me what I need. Thanks for the gentle prodding. Here is the link in case anyone else needs it.

AFAIK, the brake light switch is under the dash and connected to the brake pedal somehow. It should be pretty obvious once you get the driver's under-dash panel off and look. It's possible that the contacts in the switch are burned from years of use and are not always making contact as well as they used to; since you can't see the brake lights while you drive, you would never know.
Knowing Mercedes of that era, I believe it should be possible to remove the switch and take it apart. Careful cleaning of the contacts with very light sandpaper or emery cloth should restore clean operation. At worst you would have to replace the switch (sorry I can't find it listed in FastLane). The problem is unlikely to be due to flaky brake lights, sockets, or wiring, since they would do the opposite, they would prevent you from engaging cruise control, not disengaging. Similarly, a short to ground of the brake light wiring would blow a fuse so it's not that. Jeremy .
