Yes, FEBI or MB Hydraulic fluid are expensive but they are the ONLY fluids that should ever be in the SLS system.

Using tractor hydraulic oil (Mineral or petro based) will damage the pump and valve. $12/L for oil is cheap compared to the $1,136.80 pump.

why will hyd oil damage the pump?

I thought a manufacture cannot specify a specific brand of oil "only"...they are supposed to specify a specific type of oil.

Has anyone else done this? I have only used the Febi/MB fluid to date but have wondered what other compatible fluids are available. I imagine with lab testing to confirm, there are replacements here in the US that are more than adequate.

I just dont have the time or inclination to test.

Any Mil-H-5606 mineral based hydraulic fluid will work. ISO 46 refers to the viscosity (approx 20 wt) not the formulation and is higher than MB recommends. The following are approved by MB and are readily available at an aviation supply store:
Aral 1010
Gasolin1010.
Shell Tellust-17
Shell Aero Fluid 4
Shell Aero Fluid 41
Febi Bilstein 02615

What viscosity does MB recomend for the rear sls suspension fluid? I heard that the proper fluid is mineral based so why is it being said to not use mineral or petrol based hydraulic fluid? What other kinds of bases do hydraulic fluids have if they are not petrol or mineral based? Thanks

This is awesome info. :)
Thanks.

...Now if I can only find an aviation supply store. No listing for "We-B-planes" or "Aviation Depot" in the area. :D

Research MIL-H-5606 viscosity and you'll have your answer.

Try a local airport that serves private aircraft. If it has an FBO that does repairs you might be able to buy some from them if you have a clean container.

I thought it was amazing that so many proper options were located for you... I had a wagon 15 years ago and I had to go to the dealership for the sls fluid.... expensive...

''Aral 1010

Shell Tellust-17
Shell Aero Fluid 4
Shell Aero Fluid 41
Febi Bilstein 02615 ''

So IF someone has used Pentosin ch 11s it is not like they would have done a real test of it....

This is what I use, T-22. Great to have when doing repairs like new sls valve o-rings, changing hydraulic shocks or spheres, or just flushing and changing the filter.

Now it's called S2 V 22 ; It is slightly thicker than the MB stuff, but I live in Florida so no problem. I think they have viscosity grades down to 15. It's nice not having to skimp on fluid because you don't have enough.

Not sure what your problem is, but Pentosin meets MB specs. I've used in in 124 and 201 wagons without any problems. How real does the test have to be?

Then why didn't you just add that to the list...
clearly he does not know it fulfills the MB specs...
