What type of Hydraulic oil goes in the SLS system?

I also posted this under "Another oil thread, but not what you think!"

I only use FEBI or MB Hydraulic fluid. There are a few other brands that are OK, but I stick with these. Fastlane Phil sells them both.

Yes, FEBI or MB Hydraulic fluid are expensive but they are the ONLY fluids that should ever be in the SLS system.

Using tractor hydraulic oil (Mineral or petro based) will damage the pump and valve. $12/L for oil is cheap compared to the $1,136.80 pump.

DieselClack 10-28-2008 08:23 PM

$1,136.80 for a pump? Yikes! Thank god for a spare!

Febi. I bought mine for like $8.50/L. (Thank you my indy mechanic.)

Another indy in my area swears by Swepco.

Here's the search results of "sls fluid"
it's on the right side under your user name. Most answers can be found using a simple search.

I've always used Febi because it really isn't that expensive, especially considering you just put it in and it stays there. Kinda like brake fluid.

However, when I got my cheap wagon the previous owner has been using hydraulic fluid from Northern Tools and it has worked fine for many years.

THE most important criteria for this fluid:

NO replacement oil besides FEBI or the MB ZHM criteria fluid will ever smell as lovely when you spill it all over your driveway b/c you forgot to hook the return line back up after you flushed the system.

Citroen LHM Fluid....

jt20 10-29-2008 12:56 PM

and they smell wonderful!

Does Autozone carry ZHM fluid? My 560 is sitting low in the rear, and the fuild in the bottle is below the min. mark.

Is there any fluid I can use temporarily until I can order some of the proper fluid?

NAPA sells euro oils now. The can I used is at the shop now - 15 miles away.

I don't think adding fluid will help the rear from sitting too low, unless you're way below the MIN mark. You probably have to adjust the valve in the back a bit.
