I relized today that my 1984 300SD dose not roll back on a hill when the gear is in drive, i owned several 300SD and 300D (turbo and non) and they all rolled back down hill while the gear is in drive, is this a problem or normal???

Mine does not roll back with the engine running and tranny in D. I read somewhere that these auto trannies have the second oil pump in the rear ofthe tranny to prevent rollback.

I would guess it depends on the idle speed.

Mine doesn't roll back on moderate hills, and it doesn't have the 2nd pump.

I think he means 45* lololol.

I remember my W140 would never roll back...it had some sort of rollback lock thing when in D. Not sure about the diesel tho.

If you can push and move your car by hand on a flat surface in neutral I would not worry about it. A semi seized caliper or several of them could also act as a hill holder. This test proves you do not have that issue.

Another way to prove it is the transmission I would imagine. The car will forward creep on a flat surface with your foot off the brakes and fuel pedal.

Years ago that was a feature of at least one american car. When you depressed the clutch pedal far enough it activated the brakes I suppose. They did call the feature a hill holder.

The steepest hills that are normally accepted by the auto manufacturers are hills with a 32% grade. SF has a couple of these and certain vehicles can't make the hill due to insufficient torque to start.

The 32% grade translates to 17°.............so, you might want to readjust your estimate.
