Cracked box=New gear box
Heavy leaking around seals=New box or seal kit
Slight leaking around seals=New box or seal kit or Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak

Nobody should use stop leak or other "mechanic in a can" junk in any fluid system, no matter what/how its leaking. There are too many other components in the system that can be affected by that kind of stuff.

We all love to kid around!.. I got a good laugh out of reading all of this. Nice to know Benz owners can poke fun at themselves

More then likely you blew a seal, or the high pressure hose is leaking. Seals are replaceable if your fairly handy, hoses are easier I think.

Looked like your computer died in the middle of giving proper information just like your buddies phone died in the middle of your conversation.
So, later you only gave us details of why no details, still not enough info for us to be very helpful.
Lacking details, you get sarcasm....... It's friendly, but pointed.......

thanks for the advice, i guess he took it to a mechanic and just decided to find one out of a scrap yard(gearbox that is) rather then look at it himself and try and figure it out

I've never heard of a gearbox springing a dibilitating leak but I guess it's possible. I would have guessed one of the hoses or fittings atop of the gearbox gave out.

Mine had a small leak - 3 or 4 drops made it to the ground each night. The bottom of the box nearest the firewall was wet, so it was definitely the box leaking. I used about 4 ounces of the Lucas stuff, and the leak stopped after a few days. As usual though, Forced is correct - this isn't the best solution by any means; it's a compromise that may have unforeseen consequences.

On the other hand, I've heard good things about Lucas' Power steering stop leak, and it's worked so far. I guess time will tell.

My steering box is leaking too. I have a pitman arm seal ready to go. I sure hope that's what's leaking. The hose attachments atop the box are bone dry.
